Various non-government organizations (NGOs) are undertaking their bit with limited capacities to address the health and development issues but there is a need to give a common platform to make them work more effectively and share and learn from each other’s experiences. SRIJAN (Sexual and Reproductive Health Network for Joint Action) network now spread over 7 states of India and having about 126 members is spearheading the efforts to mainstream the issues of young people and provide them visibility in the current socio-cultural settings and political scenario. This network is currently covering about 100 districts (total 240 districts) in these states. Besides this, MAMTA is directly implementing projects in many other districts of the country.

SRIJAN’s biggest strength is the fact that 7 different states, with diverse socio-cultural and political environments are all working on/for a taboo but extremely relevant subject like Young People’s Sexual and Reproductive Health & Rights. This brings together the experience, learning and expertise of all network partners from different corners of the country. Networking with seven states to promote the sexual and reproductive health of young people has ensured the dissemination of information, ramification of activities and sharing of resources in terms of expertise and other essential resources to sustain the united efforts through relevant and effective linkages on common issues and interests of young people. Furthermore, a diversity of purpose and origin exists within NGOs in terms of functioning, structuring, funding and outputs. This diversity requires an innovative approach to facilitate effective communication and consolidation amongst all the network partners. The networking strategy has enabled members to establish linkages with national and international agencies, assist in communication, share information and learn from each other’s experiences, without surrendering their autonomy. The network has enabled members working in relative isolation to come in contact with like-minded, experienced individuals, groups and organizations.

Some major activities in the network

Forum of Young People:

This Forum, drawn from Peer Educators working in areas under SRIJAN coverage, has been capacitated on various issues of young people and is provided with platforms at national and international levels to voice their concerns, and seek suitable support and action from the policy makers and decision makers in the society.

Resource Centers:

SRIJAN will be establishing information resource centers in the states that are under its coverage. These Resource Centers, located with State Facilitating Agencies, will act as a rich information source on young people's issues like HIV/AIDS, early marriage and early pregnancy, youth friendly services in addition to issues like education retention and sexuality education.

Synchronized Advocacy

The 150 Network Partners have identified some issues for joint advocacy at national as well as state levels. These issues are:

    a) Young People's Rights

    b) Youth Friendly Services

    c) Education Retention

    d) Sexuality Education

    e) Young People and HIV/AIDS
