MAMTA-Health
Institute for Mother and Child works on integrated health and development
issues in the context of poverty, gender and rights with life cycle
approach. While addressing the reproductive and child health issues with
the marginalized community started the intervention on RTIs/ STIs and HIV/
AIDS prevention for youth and women during 1996 – 1998 with the support of
Royal Norwegian Embassy (NORAD). The organisation become the lead partner of
International HIV/AIDS Alliance UK in 2000 for community based care and
support (CBCS) programme for HIV/AIDS. This encouraged developing an
integrated model for prevention of mother to child transmission (PMTCT) of
HIV/AIDS through safe motherhood initiative with support of AusAID.
The CBCS
programme is to provide appropriate and adequate clinical and psycho-social
support, by means of home and community care, delivered through seven
partner NGOs and referral health care providers of people living with
HIV/AIDS, their families and children affected by AIDS in Delhi. The
programme has enabled to promote general involvement of people with AIDS (GIPA),
and promoted advocacy mechanism for policy initiatives. It could develop
local health services providers (Dais, RMP, Anganwadi etc.) network and
establish community based voluntary counselling and testing centre (VCTC).
The
integrated approach towards PMTCT through safe motherhood initiatives is
being undertaken in an urban slum of
Delhi and two districts of Himachal
Pradesh (Solan and Hamirpur). The intended
objective of the project is to create a safe and supportive environment for
PMTCT of HIV/AIDS through safe motherhood initiative. The emphasis is
mainly through awareness generation amongst the target population (women and
men in the reproductive age group) and sensitisation of the service
providers as well as state and district level government functionaries to
mainstream PMTCT of HIV/AIDS approach in the existing public health system.
The organisation is providing technical support to partner NGOs for
enhancing their knowledge and skills on community mobilisation, counselling,
safe-motherhood, HIV/AIDS, stigma and discrimination, voluntary counselling
and testing and PMTCT of HIV/AIDS, and stigma and discrimination.
Nonetheless,
HIV/ AIDS and young people is one of the major thrust of MAMTA work. It has
initiated an intervention on RTIs/ STIs and HIV/ AIDS prevention for youth
in process of addressing RCH issues with marginalised community in urban
slum. At present the organisation is working to develop a district model of
adolescent health and development for HIV/ AIDS prevention and management in
Rewari District at Haryana. The effort is also being made to develop the
comprehensive communication package and strategies focus on HIV/ AIDS to
reach the young people in the socio cultural settings in two Indian States
Rajasthan and West Bengal under the theme of ‘What Every Adolescent has
Right to Know’ in partnership with UNICEF.
